USM PLANS TO TREAT INJURED GAZA CHILDREN IN M`SIA

PENANG (Malaysia), Feb 3 (Bernama) -- In a bid to do its part for the
Palestinians in Gaza, local Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is planning to bring
children from the war-torn area to Malaysia for treatment and temporary shelter
until it is safe for them to return home.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said although there were
numerous humanitarian efforts extended to the war victims, including the setting
up of various funds, they were not sufficient as the war victims needed more
than just money.

"The situation in Gaza is grave and destruction is everywhere, including
hospitals. Medical specialists there are facing problems as there are not enough
equipment and too many patients.

"USM needs to take this initiative and bring children who were injured and
traumatised by the war so that they can be treated here," he told a news
conference after delivering his keynote address titled "APEX University: A
Claim, A Sacrifice", here Monday.

Dzulkifli said USM planned to treat the children at the Universiti Sains
Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian.

He said USM was in talks with several parties, including Mercy Malaysia to
make the mission possible.

"If all goes well, USM is expected to place at least 10 Palestinian children
under the age of 10 in HUSM by mid-March," he said.
