Mohammed bin Zayed meets Ban Ki-moon
Abu Dhabi, February 4, 2009 (WAM) - General HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan,Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon held talks in Abu Dhabi yesterday on the current developments on the regional and the global levels.
The efforts spent for calming down the situation and achieving a durable ceasefire on the Palestinian front topped the issues of their discussion held at the Bateen Palace.
At a meeting which was also attended by UAE foreign minister HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, they reviewed the overall developments in the region and the ongoing movement for achieving progress in calming down the situation as well as for ensuring a durable ceasefire on the Palestinian front for the sake of reaching the arrangements and guarantees to avert the recurrence of the aggression and escalation, and to work towards opening the crossings to Gaza for taking humanitarian and relief supplies to there.
Ban Ki-moon expressed his profound feelings after he witnessed the magnitude of devastation in Gaza Strip brought about by intensive Israeli bombardment that lasted over three weeks. He reiterated the importance of accepting the international resolutions and peace initiatives by all parties for averting more bloodshed, destruction and sufferings in the region.
The UN Secretary General lauded the humanitarian stance of the UAE and its efforts for alleviating the sufferings of people in various parts of the world in times of natural disasters and man-made calamities and conflicts. He hailed the keenness of the UAE leadership in providing assistance and support to various UN agencies for finding permanent solutions for challenges and difficulties faced by the world countries.
Ban Ki-moon considered UAE as an exemplary model for adopting humanitarian initiatives and extending help to the international community for establishing peace, security and stability in the region.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed praised the active role taken up by the United Nations, represented by its Secretary General, for eradicating violence and establishing peace in the region. He also hailed the efforts of Ban Ki-moon on the wider international level for protecting human rights and establishing peace and security in several parts of the world.
Sheikh Mohammed also stressed the keenness of the UAE leadership for pushing forth joint work and cooperation with the UN and other international organisations based on UAE's faith in the efficacy of consolidated efforts and integration of roles for finding solutions for various pressing issues with humanitarian dimensions. This cooperation will also enable the international organisations, through a collective vision, for fortifying its capabilities for evolving solutions for many of the current issues and for facing the future challenges in the interest of the entire mankind, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed said.
