M'SIA'S REFEREE NAZRI DIES OF HEART ATTACK IN CANARY ISLAND

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- Former director of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referees Department, Mohd Nazri Abdullah died of a heart-attack in Las Palmas, Canary Island in Spain Monday night.

Nazri, 54, the country's most celebrated referee who had officiated in two
World Cups (France 1998 and 2002 Japan-South Korea) and AFC, FIFA refereeing
instructor and assessor, was supervising a FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa's
Referees and Assistant Referees seminar held in Spain's 9th most populous city
when he died, said a statement from the AFC website Tuesday.

The Malaysian, a highly respected figure in Asia, was the former AFC
Director of Referees from July 2005 to February 2007, a period during which he
was deeply involved in improving the standard of refereeing in Asia.

Nazri who won the AFC Referee of the Year in 1995 was born on Jan 23, 1955
in Kuala Kedah and started refereeing at the age of 17.

He earned his FIFA referee license in 1989 which allowed him to referee
World Cup qualifying round matches and later World Cup finals.

Nazri is survived by his wife and three children.


AFC President Mohamed Hammam in extending his sincere condolences to Nazri's
family and friends said that he was a great referee with a good understanding of
the sport and its laws.

"As the Director of the AFC Referees Department, he strived to raise the
level of refereeing," said Hammam.

AFC Referees Committee Chairman Yousuf Al Serkal said Nazri's death was a
great loss to the Asian football family, adding that he had contributed greatly
to Asian football in various capacities.

Yoshimi Ogawa, Director of the AFC Referees Department said: "When he was in
charge of any course or seminar his attention to detail was unbelievable and he
will be busy with it from morning until night.

Meanwhile, according to Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) website,
Nazri's remains are expected to arrive Wednesday evening at his residence
situated at No. 22, Jalan PJS9/14, Bandar Sunway.

His burial is expected to take place on Thursday.
