Malaysian Jia Wei Secures Maiden International Title
KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysian junior shuttler Tan Jia Wei claimed his maiden international title after emerging victorious at the 43rd Polish Open International Challenge Badminton Championship in Warsaw, Poland on Sunday.
The unseeded player pulled off a surprise upset by defeating fourth seed, Coelho Ygor of Brazil 21-13, 20-22, 21-10 in the men's singles final according to Badminton World Federation (BWF) website www.bwfbadminton.org.
In the women's singles final, 2015 world junior runner-up, Lee Ying Ying, however, failed to continue her winning streak after losing 21-13, 19-21, 10-21 to third seed Yui Hashimoto of Japan.
The country's challenge in the men's and mixed doubles events of the US$20,000 (RM88,510) tournament had ended in the preliminary rounds.
Meanwhile, former national women's singles player Tee Jing Yi failed in her bid to claim the women's double title at the Vietnam International Challenge held at Cau Giay Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam on Sunday.
Jing Yi who switched to the doubles last month and partnered Joyce Choong Wai Chi, put up a stiff competition against seventh seeds Erina Honda/Nozomi Shimizu of Japan before losing 14-21, 21-19, 14-21 in the 52-minute final.
The country's challenge in three other events -- men's singles, doubles and women's doubles -- fizzled out after the players were defeated by their respective opponents.
