20 ISLANDS IN LANGKAWI TO BE NAMED

ALOR SETAR (Malaysia), Feb 4 (Bernama) -- Twenty unnamed islands in Langkawi
will be named while several others may have new names deemed more suitable by
the northern Kedah state government.

Chief Minister Azizan Abdul Razak said the move was part of the
state strategies to woo tourists to Langkawi which consist of 100 islands.

He said however, the state government would get feedbacks from the
people before naming them.

"We are not in a hurry to name the islands and renaming several others with
more attractive names," he told reporters after chairing the state executive
council meeting at Wisma Darul Aman here Wednesday.

Azizan said a study would be carried out to improve the facilities at the
Pulau Payar Marine Park to generate revenue for the state as the island was
administered by the federal government.

On a newspaper report that a Kedah state executive councillor was involved
in a misconduct, he said he had no knowledge about it.

"How do you know since I do not know about it. If you have the proofs, make
a police report.

"It is an unprofessional report by a half-baked person. I am not going to
entertain this. It is easy to make accusations. You can be sued," he said.

Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah is an archipelago of 99 islands (an extra 5
temporary islands are revealed at low tide in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off
the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.
