Badminton: Olympic Champion Marin Hopes To Add Another Superseries Title By Winning Malaysian Open
KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), April 4 (Bernama) -- Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games champion Carolina Marin who lost to India's PV Sindhu in the final of the India Open 2017 Super series at the Siri Fort complex in New Delhi Monday, said
the Malaysian Open 2017 Premier Super series would be a different ball game.
Sindhu who had lost to Marin in the Rio Olympics final last year, avenged that defeat by beating the Spanish ace 21-19, 21-16 to clinch her second super series title and first India Open title.
"I have no pressure despite losing to Sindhu in the India Open. I am feeling tired from my flight but I am happy to be here in Malaysia (Sarawak), another opportunity for me to add to my title collections and I want to enjoy playing in front of Malaysian fans," she told reporters here Monday.
Asked if being an Olympic gold medalist she would have a slight advantage at the Malaysia Open here, she said all the top ten players in the women's singles were of the same level, adding that anyone can win in the tournament.
"It is about doing your best and who are the players you will be playing against. As for me I will try to do my best in all the matches here. I always take it game by game...I will play my first round match on Wednesday (against Hong Kong's Yip Pui Yin) and I hope that I will qualify for the final," she said.
To another question, Marin said her main target last year was to participate and win the Olympics and after having achieved that feat feels motivated and confident to win more titles.
"I will do my best and enjoy my game,” she said, adding that it was always very difficult for any player to perform their best throughout the year. For me my best performance was at the Olympics and now I am eying the World Championship and hope I will be at my best performance," she added.
Marin is also an ambassador for Spain's La Liga and besides badminton, she also helps promote Spain's number one sport (football) around Asia.
"Football is a popular sport in Spain but I am really happy because everyone in Spain now knows what badminton is," she said adding that her dream has come true in promoting badminton in her country.
