Malaysia: MyCARE To Send Humanitarian Mission To Somalia
KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 (Bernama) -- Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE) will send a mission to Somalia in aid of the people facing a hunger crisis there.
Its chairman, Assoc Prof Dr Hafidzi Mohd Noor said the seven-day mission from April 26 would bring aid worth RM500,000 to assist about 12,000 people in the country.
"We will be sending eight volunteers, including MyCARE officers, three medical doctors and engineers to several areas in Hargeisa, Somalia to deliver the aid comprising food, clean water, medicines and children's needs.
"The delegation will also review the situation there while monitoring the aid delivery process and identifying long-term projects that can be implemented, either educational or other developments there," he said.
He was speaking to reporters in conjunction with the launch of the humanitarian mission to Somalia, here, Thursday. Also present was MyCARE chief executive officer, Kamarul Zaman Shaharul Anwar.
"Although the mission cannot help all the people in Somalia, this is a start for MyCARE to provide aid there as this is the first time we are going there.
"We do not want the people of Somalia to continue to be victims of starvation and famine. Since 1992, this is the third time the country is facing a crisis like this and over 560,000 people have died of hunger," he said.
Hafidzi said MyCARE would work with two non-governmental organisations, KLGhaith Berhad and the African Relief Committee.
He said they also launched the Somalia Relief Fund 2017 and the public could make contributions.
At the ceremony, MyCARE signed an agreement of understanding with KLGhaith Berhad.
Kamarul Zaman represented MyCARE while KLGhaith Berhad was represented by its director-general Mohamed Ahmed Fouad.
