Eleven-year-old student wins nationwide quiz show

SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Yonhap) -- An 11-year-old boy was crowned champion of a TV quiz
show, beating among others a retired schoolteacher in the final.
Shin Jeong-hwan, a fifth grader at an elementary school in the country's
southeastern Gyeongsang Province, beat five adult competitors on KBS's "Quiz
Korea" recorded on Wednesday. He became the champion after correctly answering
the question in the fourth and final stage.
He had outscored 60-year-old former teacher Kim Young-hee to reach the final.
Shin received a prize of 41 million won (US$30,000), KBS officials said.
"I like to read books. I've read over 10,000 books," he said after the show.
Nicknamed a "walking encyclopedia," Shin said his grandfather had recommended he
try out for the contest. He advanced to the main show with outstanding results in
the regional preliminaries last year, according to KBS.
The program will be aired on Feb. 15.
