FIRM ACTION AWAITS DEMONSTRATORS -IGP

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Musa
Hassan said police will take firm action against those involved in illegal
gatherings or demonstrations in Perak following political uncertainty in the
state.

"I hope party supporters will not stage gathering as they only inconvenience
the people and disturb public order. Party leaders should calm the supporters
and advise them not to break the law," he told Bernama here Thursday.

The IGP was commenting on rumours that the opposition would hold gatherings
and demonstrations to protest the fall of the People's Alliance state government
after four state assemblymen defected to ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

The four who defected were Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang), Mohd Osman Jailu
(Changkat Jering), both from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Hee Yit Foong
(Jelapang) from DAP and Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim (Bota).

There were also rumours that SMSes had been circulating asking opposition
party supporters to coverge on Ipoh for a demonstration.

Musa said those who flout the law would face action under section 27 of
Police Act for illegal assembly.

Police and the General Operations Force (GOF) had been put on alert for any
eventuality in certain locations in Perak.

"The situation in Perak is still under control. Police will continue to
safeguard security when needed," he added.

In the March 8 general election last year, Perak was one of the five states
won by the opposition.
