Unofficial: Ahok Fails To Retain Jakarta Governor Post

JAKARTA, April 19 (Bernama) -- Unofficial results show that incumbent Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or better known as Ahok has failed to defend the post in the run-off of the Jakarta gubernatorial election on Wednesday. The results indicated that Anies Baswedan and his running mate Sandiaga Uno had won. Anies is a former Education and Culture Minister while Sandiaga a businessman. Ahok’s running mate was Djarot Saiful Hidayat. Local media portals reported that as at 7pm local time, Anies-Sandiaga had secured 55.41 of the votes. Ahok was reported to have conceded defeat and that both he and Anies urged the people in the Indonesian capital to close ranks. The election which is for a five-year term did not see any clear cut winner in the first round (securing at least 51 per cent of the votes, thus the need for the run-off). --BERNAMA
