LEGAL PRACTITIONERS TOLD TO DEFEND COURT`S SANCTITY

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The Regent of northern state of Perak Raja
Nazrin Shah has urged legal practitioners to always defend the sanctity of
court's name from being deviated by irresponsible people.

"Court should never be perceived by the people as an opera peformance whose
script was written by a particular director," he said at the 14th Convocation
Certificate in Legal Practice Examination 2008 at Putra World Trade Centre here
Thursday.

He said court also should be guarded from being used as a platform by people
seeking political influence which can tarnish the nobleness and image of the
legal profession.

He said legal practice based on a high code of ethics can stengthen the
democratic system in the country in line with the check and balance mechanism
between the legislative power, executive power and judiciary power.

"The basic governmental and national principles contained in the
constitution must be upheld to ensure justice - to ensure the people continue to
have confidence in the legal system," he said.

Raja Nazrin said transparent and convincing implementation of the rule of
law principle is a crucial component in enhancing confidence of the oustide
world especially investors in the country.

However, he said that at the same time paradox occurs; triggering a polemic
that a huge increase in quantity in a short period has affected quality.

"Is this statement true; or actually is there a value gap and interpretation
gap between two generations representing different eras.

"Some are of the opinion that the yardstick on the quality of a lawyer in
the first 25 years of Malaysian independence represented by the late Azmi
Mohamad, the late Mohamad Suffian and my father Sultan Azlan Shah is different
from the yardstick used this day," he said.

Raja Nazrin also gave a reminder on the importance of legal practitioners
making themselves as examples, putting a benchmark on citizens in terms of the
practice of respecting the law and not to ridicule court.
