M'SIAN GLCs URGED TO HELP DEVELOP SPORT

PENANG (Malaysia), Feb 7 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry hoped
that more government-linked companies (GLCs) would play their role in helping to
promote and sponsor sports activities in the country.

Its minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said that as GLCs, they should carry out
their social responsibility by extending financial support to ensure smooth
implementation of all sports programmes.

"The reason being that the task of developing sports should not be placed
solely on the goverment," he told reporters here Friday.

He said the implementation of high performance sports programmes and
activities required high cost and that it would burden the government if there
was no contribution from the GLCs.

"With the current economic uncertainty, the government alone can't afford to
sponsor all programmes that have been planned, especially for development of
football which is deteriorating following financial problems," he added.
