SCOMI'S MUMBAI MONORAIL PROJECT TAKES OFF
By P.VIJIAN
MUMBAI, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- The foundation stone for RM1.85 billion monorail project, to be jointly built by Scomi Engineering Bhd was laid by Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan Monday night.
Scomi along with its consortium partner Larsen & Tubro (L&T) would construct
the 19.5 km stretch connecting south Mumbai to the eastern suburbs, Jacob
Circle to Chembur via Wadala in India's financial capital, home to nearly 15
million people.
The network with 18 stations and a depot facility would facilitate trains
every six to nine minutes during the initial period.
"This is a major milestone for the project which we won three months ago for
the Mumbai metropolitan.
"The Mumbai monorail project spans 19.5 km long, involving 18 stations and
it will take us 24 months to complete the first phase and the second phase in 30
months," Scomi Engineering Berhad chief executive officer Shah Hakim Shahzanim
Zain told reporters here.
Last year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRD)
awarded the multi-million project to Scomi and L& T. The consortium beat seven
other international cum local bidders to secure the mega infrastructure venture
in the city.
Shah Hakim said nearly 15 Malaysians were deployed in Mumbai, who would pool
in their technological expertise to build India's first monorail system, where
Scomi would be involved in design and integration of the system while L&T would
construct the infrastructure.
Besides, the monorail, last night Chavan also launched the 1.3 km skywalk at
the Chembur Railway station and the over-head bridge at the Acres Club in
Mumbai.
