ILLEGAL ASSEMBLY: INDONESIAN NATIONAL PLEAD NOT GUILTY
KUALA KANGSAR (Malaysia), Feb 11 (Bernama) -- An Indonesian national, Idris
Mhd Thaib, Wednesday pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to a charge
of participating in an illegal assembly at Jalan Istana, Bukit Chandan here on
Feb 6 during the appointment and swearing-in of Perak Menteri Besar (Chief
Minister) Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
Idris, 34, an estate worker from Padang Changkat, Kuala Kangsar, together
with eight other men, were alleged to have committed the offence between 2.30pm
and 3.30pm last Friday and could be sentenced under Section 145 of the Penal
Code which provided for a jail sentence of not more than two years or a fine or
both, upon conviction.
The other local men charged were from various localities in the northern
state of Perak. They too claimed trial after the charge was read before judge
Norsalha Hamzah.
All nine men also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge of disobeying
a police order to disperse on the same date and at the same time and place which
was a crime under Section 27 (4) of the Police Act 1967 which provided for a
fine of between RM2,000 and RM10,000 and a jail term of not more than one year
upon conviction.
Judge Norsalha allowed bail of RM4,000 and two sureties each for all the
local men while the Indonesian national was allowed a bail of RM5,000 with one
surety. She fixed April 13 to 17 for the trial. (US$1=RM3.61)
