BIRD FLU OUTBREAKS HIT FOUR SUB DISTRICTS IN BANTUL

Yogyakarta, Feb. 12 (ANTRA) - Bird flu or Avian Influenza (AI) outbreaks have killed hundreds of poultry in four sub districts in Bantul District, Yogyakarta Province.

"The districts which have been hit by AI virus, are Bambanglipuro, Jetis, Piyungan and Bantul," Sri Budoyo, an official of the Bantul district marine, fishery and animal husbandry, said here on Thursday.
Rapid tests conducted on some dead poultry in the four sub districts positively indicated that the animals had died because of the AI virus, he said.
"The results of the rapid tests on some dead poultry showed they had AI. Therefore, we urge local people to be on alert and take anticipative steps," he said.
He said during the current rainy season from January to March 2009, the AI virus threat was quite high.
Bantul needed disinfectant to spray chicken back-yard farms as the disinfectant stock in the district was depleting, he said.
There were 71 bird flu cases in 2007 and 32 cases in 2008 in Bantul.
Meanwhile, some 133 chickens believed to have caught bird flu were culled at a hamlet in Bali's Badung district last Tuesday (Feb. 10).
The measure was taken after tens of chickens belonging to Sibang residents died suddenly.
