RUDD MENTIONS RI ASSISTANCE IN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT

Brisbane, Feb 12 (ANTARA) - Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd mentioned Indonesian financial assistance of US$1 million for bush fires victims in Victoria in a session of the Federal Parliament in Canberra on Thursday afternoon.

At the Parliament session which was aired by ABC TV, Rudd said Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono thought Australia was a friend who continued to help Indonesia.

The information about Indonesian assistance was mentioned by Rudd in the Federal Parliament a day before President Yudhoyono sent a letter of sympathy to the Australian prime minister over the deadly bush fires in Victoria state.

In the letter to Rudd, President Yudhoyono expressed deep sympathy and shared grief over Australian's worst bush fires in many years that have claimed at least 200 lives.

"In the spirit of the Australia-Indonesia partnership, Australia's success is also Indonesia's success, and its misery is also Indonesia's misery," Yudhoyono said in the letter.

In addition to the US$1 million contribution for the reconstruction of schools destroyed by the fires in Victoria state, the Indonesian president said, his country would also send a police forensic team to Australia to help identify fire victims.

Speaking before members of the Federal Parliament, Rudd said Australia was not feeling lonely in its most difficult situation because other countries had shown their deepest sympathy.

Rudd said solidarity with the fire victims had been expressed all over the world.
