STIMULUS PACKAGES IMPACT KEY TO TRADE PERFORMANCE

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's trade performance this year
will depend on the outcome of the various stimulus economic packages being
introduced in major economies as well as the country's second stimulus package.

Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Liew Vui Keong,
said to boost demand and generate new export orders, industries were looking for
positive outcome of the various stimulus packages.

"To mitigate the impact on operations and export orders from the global
economic crisis, they are taking various measures to reduce costs, improve
efficiency and productivity while intensifying promotional activities to seek
new export opportunities in niche areas," he said at the briefing on Malaysia's
trade performance 2008 here Thursday.

Liew said Malaysian businesses must allocate resources carefully and invest
in promotion and marketing initiatives to sustain visibility, as well as the
confidence of their clients.

"During the current downturn, exporters should reinforce and reinvigorate
their companies with improved product research and development, positioning and
branding.

"At the same time, they can also re-invest in developing new streams of
market information and related value-added knowledge, information, communication
and technology and human resource development," he said.

He said Malaysia External Trade Development Corp would help provide market
intelligence through its network of 39 offices abroad.

Liew said within the electrical and electronic sector, the implementation of
projects for the manufacturing of solar cells and modules was expected to
contribute to the increase in export earnings of the industry.

"To date, three global solar photovoltaic manufacturers have received
approval to set up set up their projects here with an expected combined exports
valued at RM11.5 billion per annum," he said.

He said of the three, one has already begun exporting its solar products
while the other two were in the process of constructing their manufacuting
plants.

Liew said the impact of the cut in electricity tariff from March 1 would be
positive for the industry.
