NGOs PROTEST USE OF COAL BY CILACAP POWER PLANT

Cilacap, Indonesia, Feb. 12 (ANTARA) - Activists of Greenpeace and the Anti-Coal Coalition (Walhi, Jatam, KAM and SDE) staged a rally in front of the Cilacap Power Plant (PLTU) here to protest the use of coal in generating electricity.

They brought along some banners with texts reading among other things, "Coal is Deadly" and "Coalition Against Coal".

Tens of the environmental NGO activists made a theatrical performance showing the negative impact of coal.

Cilacap PLTU officials and police officers invited the protesters to come inside the power plant office for a dialog but the NGO activists declined the invitation.

Greenpeace's Southeast Asia Climate and Energy Campaigner Arif Fiyanto urged the government to stop exporting and using coal as an energy source.

The NGOs also rejected Cilacap PLTU's expansion plan and urged the government to use renewable and clean energy sources, instead of coal.

Greenpeace on the occasion also presented the results of medical check-up of 562 people living in areas surrounding the Cilacap PLTU.

Based on the health check-up, it was found out that 60 percent of the local residents suffered from acute respiratory problems, 20 percent from bronchitis, 10 percent from pharyngitis and another 10 percent from other diseases.
