Smog blankets Thailand's northern provinces
CHIANG MAI, Feb12 (TNA) - Residents in some northern Thai provinces on Thursday are being advised to wear a facial masks when going outdoors with dust particles concentration in many areas reaching a harmful level, according to a public health official.

The Pollution Control Department has warned the public that dust particles have been registered in Lampang province at a level of 130 microgrammes per cubic metre, higher than the acceptable standard level of 120 microgrammes. In Lamphun, the measure was at the limit of 120 microgrammes.

The air pollutants can be a hazard to health, including the eyes and nose. Local residents were advised to avoid outdoor exercise.

The Royal Rainmaking Bureau dispersed chemical substances for rainmaking in the skies over the two provinces. It was expected artificial rain would reduce the level of smog in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, Surasing Virutrat, deputy chief of Chiang Mai public health office, said that the smog casting over the city has reached an alarming level, as dust particles of smaller than 10 microns have amassed and registered at a level of 120 microgrammes per cubic metre.

Dr. Surasing said that local residents should protect themselves from air pollution by wearing a facial mask when they leave home. Those with a history of respiratory-related diseases will be at much more risk.

The public health officer also warned residents to stop all kinds of burning activities to help reduce the smog, which was emanating from forest fires and leaf burning by local residents. (TNA)
