ROHINGYA REFUGEES` HEALTH IN SABANG IMPROVING

Banda Aceh, Feb. 13 (ANTARA) - The health of Rohingya refugees currently being accommodated on Sabang Island in Aceh Province after drifting at sea for days in deplorable conditions is improving gradually, a social worker said.

"They have generally recovered from their traumatic ordeals although some of them are still being treated in hospital", Romdlon Hidayat, the head of the Aceh branch of non-governmental organization Muslim Community Care Justice Post (PKPU), said here on Friday.

The Muslim refugees from Myanmar were still under intensive supervision of the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry, he said.

The refugees in Sabang had been accommodated on the premises of the Indonesian Navy's Swhang base, he said.

A number of other Rohingya refugees were now also being cared for at the office of Idi Rayeuk sub district administration in East Aceh District, he said.

PKKU's medical team consisting of among others Dr. Rina Juwita, a physiologist, and Dr. Mehmed, a general practitioner, gave medical and food assistance to the Rohingya Muslims in Sabang.

"They still need our help. God Willing, we will come back with more assistance, including staple food, clothes and prayer equipment," he said.

Over the past one month, Aceh Province has received nearly 400 Rohingya refugees. Some 193 Rohingya boat people got stranded in Sabang, Aceh on January 7, 2008, and another 198 Rohingyas reached the coast of East Aceh after 21 days at sea, with some of them in a critical condition on February 3, 2008.
