POLICE FIND HEROIN IN TAXI BOOT, ARREST TWO NIGERIAN STUDENTS
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- Two private college students from Nigeria were arrested yesterday after police found heroin in the boot of a taxi they were travelling in.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Muhammad Sabtu Osman said the taxi was
stopped at the toll plaza of the Pantai Dalam-bound New Pantai Expressway at
4.20pm.
"The policemen opened the boot and saw two black clothing bags, and upon
inspection the bags were empty," he told a press conference here Friday.
The Nigerians, aged 25 and 34, were then taken to the Kuala Lumpur
Contingent Police Headquarters for further investigations. They tested negative
for drugs, have lived in Malaysia for three years and do not have criminal
records.
When police cut open the inside of the bags, they found three packages
weighing 1,704 grammes in one and a package weighing 1,318 grammes in the other.
The heroin packages were wrapped in aluminium foil.
Sabtu said that following the find, police picked up a Tanzanian at a house
in Bandar Sunway at 7pm.
During a search at the house, police found two plastic packages containing
heroin weighing 3,396 grammes and 142 capsules of the same drug weighing 2,210
grammes.
"The suspect came to the country as a tourist on Feb 7 and often frequented
the country. The urine test on the suspect showed positive for opiate and the
suspect does not have criminal records," Sabtu said.
All the drugs seized were estimated at RM1.8 million and all the suspects
were under investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, he said.
He said police believed the drugs were to be smuggled out of the country and
the Tanzanian national was to fly to China Friday night.
"With the arrests police have busted an international drug trafficking
syndicate comprising Africans. We have also saved local drug couriers," he said.
In another case, Sabtu said police had arrested a man, believed local, at
the lobby of Menara Casa Ria in Jalan Jejaka, Taman Maluri, at 10.45pm
Thursday.
Police found four transparent plastic packets containing 1,000 ecstasy pills
weighing 328 grammes worth RM30,000 in the bag the man was carrying.
"The urine test on the 40-year-old suspect showed positive for
amphetamine
and we believe the pills were to be marketed at fun outlets around Cheras,"
Sabtu said.
The suspect was also detained under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act
1952.
