KL-BOUND KETAMINE IN TEA PACKETS HELD IN CHENNAI
By P. Vijian
CHENNAI, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- After a brief lapse, authorities foiled another attempt to smuggle ketamine to Malaysia, this time weighing 6.25kg, after arresting an Indian national at the Chennai Airport Friday morning.
Chennai Customs Intelligence unit picked up the 37-year-old suspect before
he boarded the Kuala Lumpur-bound Indian Airlines IC955.
"They (ketamine traffickers) were laying low for sometime, but we managed to
nab one person yesterday with over 6kg of ketamine. He was heading to Malaysia
and we believe he was paid between Rs5,000 to Rs10,000 to carry the contraband,"
Chennai Commissioner of Customs (Air) Parminder Singh told Bernama.
The drugs were concealed inside nine packets of Brooke Bond Roses Tea which
were hidden in the passenger's hand luggage.
"On questioning, the passenger admitted that he had agreed to carry the
contraband to Kuala Lumpur for monetary considerations. The passenger is
arrested for further investigation. This is our first case this year," he added.
Ketamine, a popular party drug among youngsters, is easily available in
India where it is commonly use as animal anesthetic and Chennai has become a
easy exit point for drug traffickers heading to Southeast Asian countries.
Its export is only allowed subject to obtaining "No Objection Certificate"
from the Narcotics Commissioner of India.
Over the last one year, Chennai Airport Customs had seized a total of 67.2kg
of ketamine and 11.5kg of heroine, with a total value over RM13 million in the
international market.
