MAS EYES 7 PCT COST REDUCTION IN 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) plans to reduce its cost by seven percent this year, said its managing director and chief executive officer Idris Jala.

"This year we want to reduce cost further by seven percent. We need to do
this to survive during this economic crisis. We don't know how bad it is going
to be.

"We are watching our business on a daily basis," he told a press conference
here, Wednesday.

Last year, MAS managed to cut cost by RM900 million (US$1=RM3.65), much
higher than the RM738 million in 2007 and RM668 million in 2006.

According to Idris, MAS will firm up its plans for dealing with the economic
crisis and make an announcement on it at the end of this month.

On another note, he said the crisis also provided opportunities for airlines
to work together and enhance capability.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is the flag carrier of Malaysia.
