MAS IN CODE-SHARING PACT WITH JET AIRWAYS
PETALING JAYA, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) expects to capture about 10 percent of the untapped traffic potential valued at RM10 million (US$1=RM3.65) to RM12 million annually from India to Kuala Lumpur following a code-sharing agreement with India's Jet Airways.
"If you look at the overall multiplier effect of the such agreement, beyond
Kuala Lumpur and India, it can bring in between RM30 million and RM40 million
for MAS in revenue," said MAS chief executive officer Idris Jala.
The airline's total interline revenue was RM680 million per annum, he said.
The Jet Airways-MAS partnership will work towards expanding and
strengthening the hub and spoke network and allow MAS to capture untapped
traffic from secondary points in India through the Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai,
Bangalore and Hyderabad on MAS' network, Idris told reporters after signing the
agreement here Wednesady.
Representing Jet Airways was its chairman Naresh Goyal. Also present were
Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha, MAS chairman Dr Munir Majid
and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's managing director Bashir Ahmad
Abdul Majid.
The code-sharing and network-wide reciprocal frequent flyer partnership
sealed today after two years of discussions will take effect from March 3 while
tickets can be purchased from Feb 25 onwards.
Asked if MAS will be keen to take up stakes in India's airline companies,
Idris said: "We are always looking out for opportunity. The crisis is a great
opportunity to look out for any win-win deals not only in India but beyond as
well."
India, according to him, has been an important market as tourist arrivals
from there last year amounted to 550,000 passengers, a 34 percent increase from
2007.
"Of that, MAS carried 332,000 passengers, which is a little more than 53
percent market share. So if we work with Jet Airways, it can provide MAS a lot
more feeder traffic from its 42 routes in India," he said.
MAS, the national carrier currently operates a total of 32 weekly flights to
India, with 10 flights to Delhi, daily flights to Mumbai and Chennai, five to
Bangalore and three to Hyderabad.
