JAPAN AYE TO MALAYSIAN STATE'S GRANT REQUESTS

KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Japan welcomes East Malaysia state of Sabah to request for its grassroot grant assistance, Japan Consul-General Masashi Kono said Thursday.

He said extending financial assistance to disadvantaged people in the state,
especially those in the interior, was a way of forging goodwill between Japan
and Sabah.

"We would like to undertake many service-oriented endeavours in Sabah,
especially in developing living conditions of the locals by providing basic
necessities, infrastructure, health and education," he told reporters after
presenting a Grassroot Grant Assistance to Adventist Development and Releif
Agency (ADRA) Sabah here.

Kono said the grant was one of Japan's aid schemes funded by the country's
taxpayers.

"We hope the contribution of our (Japanese) people will further strengthen
the friendly relations between Japan and Malaysia, particularly Sabah," he said,
adding that currently, the Japan consulate here received about 10 requests
annually, which would be forwarded to its foreign ministry for approval.

Kono said that so far, Japan had extended nearly RM2.5 million (US$683,670)
to non-governmental organisations in the state to fund 22 projects at various
villages and schools.

The grant assistance of RM87,385 (US$23,903) presented to ADRA Sabah was for
the improvement of the water supply system at Kampung Bintasan in Kota Marudu,
about 131km from here.

According to Kampung Bintasan Village Development and Social Welfare
Committee chairman Melvin Gakim, there were 30 families in the village in need
of clean water.

"We get our water supply from nearby rivers. But it gets complicated for us
to get our supply when there is heavy rain or flood," he said.
