STANDARD FORMULA CRUCIAL FOR ANIMAL FEED PRODUCTION
By Premalatha Jayaraman + Siti Radziah Hamzah
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- A standard formula for animal feed production
is crucial to ensure quality and to meet the demand and supply in the
market and provide competitive pricing for the Developing Eight (D8) member
states.
A Task Force on Animal Feed led by Federal Land Development Authority
(Felda) deputy director-general Dzulkifli Abdul Wahad will discuss on the
formula that can be shared among the D8 countries to meet the standard
in producing animal feed.
Among other issues to be discussed are possible joint ventures among
the private sectors of D8 countries in the production of animal feed and
Preferential Trade Agreement.
Stressing the importance of standard in the animal feed production,
Dzulkifli said it was to make sure livestock get a balanced nutrient
and diet for growth.
"Let say for cattle, it requires a certain standard animal feed. So, the
formula will be shared among these countries," he told Bernama on the sidelines
of the three-day Developing Eight (D-8) Ministers' Meeting on Food Security.
Besides host Malaysia, seven other countries attending the meeting are Iran,
Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Nigeria, while Saudi Arabia,
Brunei and Qatar are attending as observers.
The meeting will dwell on the implementation of three initiatives for a
strategic cooperation among member countries. They are production of
quality fertilizers, animal feed and formation of a seed bank.
Dzulkifli said animal feed was produced by using maize, soya palm
kernel expeller (PKE) and oil palm fronds (OPF) in the form of pellets.
Felda, involved in animal feed production, produces 2,000 tonnes of
PKE-based animal feed a month.
It also introduced OPF-based animal feed early this year.
Dzulkifli said the product was to cater for the local market demand and for
internal use.
Its subsidiary, Felda Farm Products Sdn Bhd's, principal activity is to
integrate cattle rearing in oil palm plantations and production of PKE and
OPF-based animal feed.
