M'SIAN PM TO HOLD BILATERAL MEETINGS WITH ABHISIT AND ARROYO
By D.Arul Rajoo
HUA HIN, Feb 25 (Bernama)-- Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his Thai counterpart, Abhisit
Vejjajiva, and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo during his four-day
visit to Thailand beginning Thursday.
A Malaysian official said the meeting with Abhisit was scheduled for Friday
on the sidelines of the 14th Asean Summit here, while that with Arroyo would be
on Saturday.
Before arriving in this seaside resort on Friday, Abdullah will fly straight
to Pattaya on Thursday morning to attend the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting
(ADMM) where the ministers are set to sign several agreements, including that on
the use of Asean military assets and capacities in humanitarian assistance and
disaster relief.
In Hua Hin, Abdullah and his counterparts from the nine other Asean members
will have a busy schedule as the 42-year-old body turns into a rules-based and
integrated regional grouping following the signing of the Asean Charter in
Jakarta in December.
He will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Dr Rais Yatim and
International Trade and Industry Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the
summit.
On Saturday, Abdullah will join Abhisit and Indonesian President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono to discuss joint development programmes at the Fourth
Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMTGT) Summit, before attending the
Fifth Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area Summit.
The summit and the sideline meetings are taking place as Asean works towards
pooling its resources together to stem the global economy crisis which
continues to take its toll on the region, with reduced exports, rising
unemployment and record high food and energy prices.
The Asean leaders are also scheduled to meet representatives from Asean's
Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, youth and civil society groups and Asean Business
Advisory Council.
In Hua Hin, the Asean leaders will also have an audience with Thai King
Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch.
During the summit, Muhyiddin will hold bilateral meetings with his New
Zealand counterparts Tim Grosser and Australia's Simon Crean.
