OVER 170 PEOPLE INFECTED WITH HIV/AIDS IN KARAWANG
Karawang, Indonesia, Feb. 27 (ANTARA) - Some 171 people were infected with HIV/AID virus in Karawang District, West Java Province, in 2008.
Of the total number of HIV/AIDS patients, 28 sufferers had died, Eli Amalia Priatna, chairperson of the Karawang AIDS Control Body, said here on Thursday.
They had been infected with HIV/AIDS virus because of unprotected sex and re-use of unsterilized needles and syringes among drug addicts, she said when speaking before visitors of a Cafe in a HIV/AIDS public awareness campaign.
Eli Priatna, concurrently Kerawang deputy district head, said that the HIV/AIDS problem was the responsibility of all parties and not only the government, and the disease should get serious attention of the government and the communities.
Dr. Teddy Hidayat of Hasan Sadikin Hospital on the occasion said that the HIV/AIDS had spread rapidly Indonesia especially among drugs addicts.
The Kerawang authorities were committed to making a stop of the fatal disease spreading, he said.
Meanwhile, it was earlier reported that s total of 2,413 people in Bali have been infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.
Of the total number of HIV/AIDS sufferers, 194 had died and the rest were under medical treatment in various hospitals on Bali Island, Dr Mangku Karmaya, a spokesman of the Bali AIDS Control Commission (KPA) said on Thursday.
