MALAYSIAN CRAFT WILL BE PROMOTED WORLDWIDE
From Rohana Mustaffa
LONDON, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian crafts promotion at Harrods
Knightsbridge marks a significant milestone in its development and
commercialisation to knock on doors of other renowned departmental stores,
following its debut here, said Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister
Mohd Shafie Apdal said Thursday.
"The fact that we are here in one of the world's most prestigious
departmental stores is in itself, a marker of the advances made by this sector
of the Malaysian economy," he noted.
Speaking at the launch of the Malaysian Craft promotion at Harrods by Queen
Thursday, he said that to be able to display
and promote Malaysian crafts to thousands of Harrods customers who came from
virtually every country across the world, spoke volumes for the Malaysians who
had created the range of traditional and new craft products.
He said crafts was a tactile expression of the cultural identity of each
country and craft works was an important vehicle for cultural heritage promotion
and economic development.
Therefore, added the minister, it was vital to recognise, protect and
promote this expression of the people.
And the Malaysian government had long recognised the commercial potential of
the Malaysian crafts sector and underwritten its promotion and marketing.
"Our craftsmen and women have also risen to the challenge to produce work of
the finest quality that will sit comfortably alongside some of the world's
brands," said Shafie.
He said the ministry, in collaboration with the designers and producers,
had participated in trade and consumer fairs in several countries, and these
efforts had contributed a sales value of approximately £93.6 million in 2007,
with the export to the United Kingdom amounting to £3 million.
United Kingdom itself is the second largest market for crafts and decorative
products within the European Union and the third largest in the world.
Here in Harrods, Malaysia is showcasing 410 best Malaysian craft product
designs and 3,173 types of products ranging from home furnishings, fashion wear
and accessories made from forest-based, earth-based, metal and textile-based
materials.
Using the tagline, 'Malaysian Craft At Its Best', they were produced by 66
craft producers and designers and these products will be showcased at Harrods
until March 28.
"Our aim is to position this sector of the Malaysian economy as a leading
world player and I shall continue to encourage not only the expansion of craft
producers and the creativity of our people but the spirit of entrepreneurialism,
too.
"In this way, I am sure we will further transform the Malaysia crafts sector
into a position of global competitive advantage," he said.
