STIMULUS PACKAGE TO FOCUS ON GENERATING ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government will focus on the industrial sector and generating more economic activities to revitalise the domestic economy under the second stimulus package to be announced on March 10, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said Friday.

"We will focus on the industrial sector, people who are vulnerable,
stimulate more economic activities and construction projects," he said when
announcing the 2008 fourth quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Earlier, Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said the package or
mini-budget,
would be more comprehensive as the government had factored in the deepening of
the global economic crisis.

Asked on the prediction by International Trade and Industry Minister
Muhyiddin Yassin that the package could be more than RM10 billion or RM15
billion, Najib said: "No figures have been mentioned."

"No figure has been confirmed. I will announce on March 10," he said.

To another question whether the package would help boost the economy, he
said: "It will certainly help."

"We're attempting to increase the GDP growth through domestic demand,
easier monetary policy and offer other incentives.

"But our options don't include the export market because the manufacturing
sector has been affected due to export cancellations," he added.
