MALAYSIAN PM SATISFIED WITH WIEF PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT

JAKARTA, March 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is satisfied with the progress and development so far of the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF), which started off from a modest beginning as the OIC Business Forum on October 2003, in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

Abdullah said the WIEF was doing very well and had progressed with the
numbers of participants on the increase into its fifth year now coupled with the
fact that there were also now several countries that came forward wanting to
host the event.

"And, the volumes of investments too have been good. Like today, at this
meeting, during the opening session this morning there're quite a number of
signing of agreements with Indonesian companies," he said at a press conference
with the Malaysian media at the end of the second day of the WIEF here.

Abdullah, who is also the patron of the WIEF, said apart from the signing of
agreements, the WIEF had also thus far accommodated and helped establish a lot
of business linkages between and among companies be it during the forum held in
Malaysia, Pakistan, Kuwait or now in Indonesia.

"I'm happy with this development. Today we have a very good crowd and I have
reasons to be happy... Thank God, we decided to do something that proved to be
acceptable, to be right," he added.

Abdullah said he hoped to know by tomorrow what would be the outcome of the
discussions at this fifth WIEF, held when the world economy was really very bad
and everybody was feeling the strain of the current economic situation today.

"It's interesting to know what will be the responses from the leaders,
experts, economists, businessmen and industrialists who are here. It would be
very interesting," he said.

On the sidelines of the WIEF, Abdullah had also held bilateral talks with
several leaders, to discuss and exchange views on measures taken to weather the
negative impact of the global economic slowdown.

"We shared similar opinions and conclusions that the current situation is
very bad and requires immediate and prioritised attention, and that whatever
measures must be taken to stimulate our countries' economy as we see fit and
necessary, including the stimulus package like we've done in Malaysia, and
similarly by other countries too," he said.
