GOAT GENETICS AGENDA AT BIMP-EAGA NATURAL RESOURCES MEETING
KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), March 3 (Bernama) -- The 7th Brunei, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Natural Resources
Development (NRD) Cluster Meeting being held here will see a new proposal being
pushed for improvement of goat genetics within the region.
"We are looking at possible assistance from other countries to improve the
genetic materials of goats in the BIMP-EAGA because it is one of the items that
catered to the livelihood in the region.
"In the last meeting we have, in principle, accepted it as part of the
projects to be undertaken, so now we are formally putting it into the agenda,"
said head of the Philippines delegation Oscar O. Parawan, who is also the
regional executive director under the Phillipine Department of Agriculture.
The Phillipines heads the agro-industry working group under the NRD Cluster
initiative.
About 85 delegates from the four countries are attending the two-day meeting
starting Tuesday, where the East Malaysia state of Sabah Agriculture and Food
Industry Ministry was appointed as the host for this year.
State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin in his
speech earlier said Malaysia had always supported the BIMP-EAGA projects and
showed commitment in various projects proposed by member countries.
Among the initiatives the country is involved in are the drafting of the
framework of cooperation in the development of the oil palm industry,
development of the seaweed industry and high value aquaculture, and the Heart of
Borneo (HoB) project.
Meanwhile on the latest development of the HoB initiative - a conservation
plan intended to protect biodiversity by preserving 220,000 square kilometres of
equatorial rainforest on the Borneo Island - Indonesia's head of delegation Ir
Noor Hidayat said so far the Strategic Plan of Action had been completed.
"This year we will focus on developing the institutional arrangement, which
sets the framework for cooperation among the three countries," he said.
The Stategic Plan of Action which lists the basic guidelines for programmes
to be conducted in HoB, includes elements on border management, natural
conservation management, developing sustainable management and promoting eco-
tourism, he added.
The HoB project, launched in March 2006, covers parts of the territories of
the three nations, from the highlands along the Indonesian-Malaysian border into
low-lying areas in Brunei.
According to the WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature), the forests of the HoB are
some of the most biologically-diverse habitats on Earth, possessing staggeringly
high numbers of unique plant and animal species.
