LET'S RECYCLE FOOD WASTE INTO FERTILISER - CITY HALL
KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 (Bernama) -- In line with the economic uncertainty,
the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Tuesday called for all shopping complexes and
hotels in the city to participate in a project to recycle discarded food into
fertilisers.
City Mayor Ahmad Fuad Ismail said the project was aimed at ensuring that
discarded food from the premises did not pollute the environment, besides
making the food waste management more environment-friendly.
"Each individual in the city disposes an average of 1kg of garbage including
food daily. If these are being recycled, I'm sure we can save a lot from the
total cost for food waste cleaning, collecting and transporting processes."
He said this after signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between
DBKL and public and private agencies under the Effective Management of Solid
Waste Disposal For A Clean and Beautiful City programme, here, Tuesday.
Under the MoU, discarded food would be collected by DBKL and Alam Flora from
the related premises before being processed and recycled into fertilisers.
Ahmad Fuad said a total of 12 hotels had agreed to collaborate in the
project so far and more are expected to follow suit soon.
The project is one of the programmes under Local Agenda 21 Kuala Lumpur (LA
21 KL) which focuses on cooperation between the local authority and the
government, private sector and local community in the city development programme
towards sustainable social and economic development.
