INTERPOL'S ASSISTANCE SOUGHT TO TRACK DOWN SINGAPOREAN FUGITIVE

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), March 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian police have sought the
assistance of Interpol to track down a Singaporean fugitive who escaped while
being escorted to a lock up in the Shah Alam High Court near Malaysia's capital
city Kuala Lumpur on Feb 20.

Shah Alam OCPD, ACP Nor Azam Jamaluddin said all police stations and
checkpoints have been alerted to be on the lookout for Jay Chia Shao Kiat, 32, a
suspect charged under 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"We believe he is still in the country because there are no signs that he
has returned to Singapore or Bangkok, Thailand, where his wife and son lived.

"However, as a precaution, we have asked the Interpol from both countries to
be alert while security at entry and exit points have been increased," he told
reporters at the Shah Alam police headquarters here Tuesday.

On Feb 20, Shao Kiat who was charged for trafficking drugs, managed to
escape despite being handcuffed and escorted by two policemen outside the Shah
Alam High Court at 12.40pm.

The suspect, an English teacher in Bangkok, Thailand, was alleged to be in
possession of 600grams of Syabu and detained by airport security personnel in
September last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport while waiting to
board a flight to Tokyo.
