MALAYSIA, THAILAND FORGE CLOSER COOPERATION IN EDUCATION
LANGKAWI (Malaysia), March 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Thailand are forging
closer cooperation in education with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation
(MoC)at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tunku Putra, Padang Matsirat, here, Tuesday.
Padang Matsirat is a town in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. It is situated on
the western part of the island.
The MoC is for schools in Satun Province in southern Thailand and in
northern Kedah-state.
Thailand was represented in the MoC signing by the secretary-general of the
Chaipattana Foundation, Dr Sumet Tantivejkul, and Kedah, by Langkawi education
officer, Aziz Ahmad.
It was witnessed by Thailand's Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Tunku
Puteri Intan Shafinaz, who is the chairman of Yayasan Sultanah
Bahiyah.
The director-general of Education Alimuddin Mohd Dom said Sekolah
Menengah Tunku Putra and Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Negeri in Kuah were the first
two schools in Langkawi selected for the programme.
"We will expand the programme by including more schools throughout the
country," he added at the press conference after the MoC signing.
The MoC is for schools in both countries to establish closer ties by
communicating and exchanging information via the Internet and letters, as well
as student exchange programmes if they can afford it.
However, prior to this, cooperation between about 100 schools in Malaysia
and Thailand had already been established on an unofficial basis, but Alimuddin
was confident that more could be achieved with the MoC.
In his briefing, Sekolah Menengah Tunku Putra principal Teh Cheng Chye said
the school, set up in 1955, took after the name of Malaysia's first prime
minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.
He said the school, with almost 2,000 students, had been adopted by the
Langkawi Geopark.
Earlier, Princess Sirindhorn who was on a one-day visit to Langkawi, was
accompanied by Tunku Puteri Intan Shafinaz on a visit to Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri
Negeri. She returned to Thailand in the evening.
