-TURKEY STABILITY ISLAND, U.S. STRATEGIST SAYS
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 04.03.2009 - A senior U.S. strategist described Turkey as "a stability island" with a power to shape its region.
"Turkey is a stability island in an unstable region with an incredible commercial and military power," international relations analyst and geo-strategist Dr. George Friedman told an Istanbul conference.
"When I look at Turkey I see a great player. You are a power that can shape this region and also a power who does not willing to do so. But now this has gone far beyond a level that Turkey could resist," he said.
Friedman said Turkey would emerge more powerful from a global financial crisis with its strong banking system.
"You will become stronger when this crisis is over. Your banking system is solid and you have steered through the crisis pretty well so far," Friedman said.
The U.S. strategist said Turkey would soon need to take very important political, diplomatic and military decisions regarding Iraq, Syria and Russia.
"You are heavily dependant on Russian oil but access to southern oil resources is a must for Turkey. You have political and economic reasons to go south and you will because your interests require you to do so. If you don't, you will remain dependant on Russian oil," Friedman said.
