TNT EXPRESS BULLISH ABOUT OPPORTUNITIES IN ASIA By Zakaria Abdul Wahab
SINGAPORE, March 4 (Bernama) -- TNT Express, a leading global freight services operator, expects its business this year to continue growing, especially in Asia, despite the worsening world's market conditions.
TNT's Asia regional managing director Onno Boots said although the world
market was volatile, the company was expecting to attain a 20 percent growth in
freight volume this year.
Last year, business was robust for the company when it recorded a
year-on-year growth in freight volume of 40 percent, he said here Wednesday.
Briefing the media on TNT Express' bullish assessment of opportunities in
Asia, Boots said the company was confident of its prospects because it would
continue to focus on the right areas, servicing the telecommunications,
electronics and service equipment industries.
Moreover since last year, TNT Express had put in place infrastructure such
as opening a road hub in Bangkok and operations centre in Hanoi, apart from
having the good connectivity, quality customer service and reliability on
delivering freight on time, he said.
TNT Asia, headquartered here, has not only a seamless and dedicated
worldwide freight service connecting the region with Europe but also an
integrated air and road network linking Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam
and into China.
"Our unique Asia road network is proving highly attractive to customers in
the current economic climate," Boots said.
TNT Express was also banking on its position as the only viable alternative
for a low-cost freight operator in Southeast Asia, he said.
According to Boots, the company's intra-Asia trade this year will fare
better than the trade in Europe.
He said a recent survey showed that the freight business in the Asia Pacific
region was worth about 2.3 billion euros (1 Euro=RM4.64) and in Southeast Asia
410 million euros.
He also said that the company, which had captured over 10 percent of the
global freight market after "fishing in a small pond", was now embarking on
"fishing in a bigger pond".
Its major competitors are FedEx, United Parcel Service (UPS) and DHL.
Last year, TNT Express reported over 11.1 billion euros in revenue.
