MRCS TO INTRODUCE INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW FOR STUDENTS
KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) will introduce international humanitarian law to members in secondary schools aimed at checking the spread of violence among youths.
Vice president Hisham Harun Hashim said the subject would educate students
on good values and the humanitarian concept which were lacking and led to
several bullying cases.
"We hope that MRCS members will help educate their collegues," he said at a
ceremony to present the Henry Dunant award to former MRCS general secretary
Ruby Lee.
The highest International Red Cross and Red Crescent award was presented
by Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak here
Wednesday.
Hisham said MRCS has discussed the matter with the Education Ministry
which
agreed to introduce the subject to member students next year.
He said MRCS would set up a Junior Rapid Deployment Squad (JRDS) for members
at secondary schools to train them in disaster relief work to help flood
victims.
"Since flood victims are usually evacuated to relief centres at schools, it
is best to expose them on relief work like providing assistance, cooking food
and giving first aid," he added.
