LAW PASSED TO RATIFY INTERNATIONAL TREATY

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/ At its May 10 plenary meeting, Mongolia’s Parliament approved a Law on Ratifying International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The ratification of the treaty will allow free use of genetic resources of the world's cultivated plants for creating and developing breedings of highly productive and quality crops resilient to drought, hot, sickness and toxicity, which are essential in the development of Mongolia’s crop production. In addition, a member state can get supports from international community and other donors in training personnel and receiving technical and technological supports, required for conservation and sustainable use apply to all plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. The International Treaty on PGRFA was adopted in 2001, and came into force in June 2004. Presently, 144 countries have joined the treaty. Its objectives are: conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources and equitable benefit sharing from their use. The Treaty establishes a Multilateral System for Access and Benefit-Sharing to facilitate access between countries for food security. M.Unurzul
