Japan vows continued support for peaceful solution in Georgia

+

TOKYO, March 10 Kyodo -
Japan reassured visiting Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze on Tuesday
of its support for a peaceful resolution of the dispute over the breakaway
regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, based on the principle of territorial
integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.
In talks between Vashadze and Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone in Tokyo, the
two also agreed to launch regular high-level political consultations to enhance
relations, they said in a joint press statement issued afterwards.
The Georgian side also expressed expectations to expand business relations with
Japan, and showed its strong support towards Japan's diplomatic agenda to
foster peace and stability in the South Caucasus region, they said.
On the issue of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Nakasone expressed hope that
tangible results would continue to be achieved through discussions in Geneva on
issues related to security, stability and the safe and dignified return of
internally displaced persons and refugees, according to the statement.
Japan pledged last October up to $200 million of assistance for Georgia to
support its recovery in the aftermath of the latest series of conflicts with
Russia. Japan also opened an embassy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi in
January.
