Local businessman exports castor oil to Thailand

(KPL) Local businessmen are planning to expand the growing of the castor plant because of the high demand from Thailand.
Saravan province-based State Enterprise Commerce Import-Export company, disclosed last Friday that it would continue to cooperate with a Thai company to expand the cultivation of this crop in the southern provinces of Laos, especially Saravan province.
Mr Chanthanom Phommakaysone, Deputy Director of State Enterprise Commerce Import-Export Company said that his company is planning to increase its growth of this crop from 500 hectares in 2008 to 1,000 hectares in 2009.
“Last year, my company exported more than 400 tons of castor oil to Thailand and we were paid 1.6 billion kip, but since there is a high demand for it in Thailand and that made me carry out an expansionary policy,” he said.
“Two years ago, I only grew the castor plant and export them to Thailand, but then I shifted my focus to growing other crops too, such as soybean, ginger and cassava because these agricultural products were fetching high prices in the world’s market at that time,” he added.
However, he said that he did not think it is lucrative to grow crops like rubber and eucalyptus as they take a few years to mature and yield their products and there is the risk that they might harm the environment.
He estimated that his company would be able to harvest at least 600 tons of castor oil in the near future because of the expansion to 1,000 hectares.
He added that the castor plant does give a high yield and this is proven by the fact that one can only get 700-800 kilograms per hectare but the attraction of this crop is its high price.
