LANDSLIDE LEAVES FOUR DEAD IN JAYAPURA

Jayapura, Indonesia, March 18 (ANTARA) - Flash flood accompanied by huge landslide in Papua provincial city of Jayapura has killed at least four people, Jayapura police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Roberth Djoenso said here on Wednesday.

He said two days of torrential rains have triggered the flood and unleashed massive landslides at 5 on Wednesday morning at two separate locatins.

The landslides occurred at upper Nirwana Dock-V area and Bar Juwita area near Jayapura port, killing four people identified as Fredy Mote, Melisa Mote, Yatty Magal and her three-year old daughter, Cinta.

Roberth Djoenso said the bodies of Fredy Mote and Melisa Mote had been evacuated to Jayapura public hospital, while the bodies of Yatty Magal and her daughter had yet to be evacuated because of difficult terrain.

He added that he was still monitoring the areas hit by the floods and the landslides.

Meanwhile a witness said the rain had triggered huge landslides that later clogged up several ditches and as the rain continued, the ditches unleashed flash flood that affected several houses, schools and Yotefa market.

Environmentalists have blamed massive deforestation caused by illegal logging, claiming that the floods and landslides in various regions in Indonesia occurred after water-catchment areas above the villages were destroyed by deforestation.***
