GOVT TO ESTABLISH NATIONAL HEALTH SURVEILLANCE AGENCY

Surabaya, Indonesia, March 18 (ANTARA) - The government plans to establish a national epidemiology and surveillance agency to speed up a risk detection of disease extraordinary happening and health disasters.

"The previous existing disease surveillance team cannot respond the challenges, so this year we will form a national surveillance and epidemiology body," Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said in a national health working meeting, here on Wednesday.

Sjafi'i Achmad, the health ministry's secretary general, said the plan to set up the national epidemiology center had been approved by the state minister for state apparatus empowerment.

The agency would have branches throughout Indonesia and be tasked to carry out surveillance of disease epidemiology or monitor disease spreading and make early detection of possible disease outbreaks which could cause a disease extraordinary happening, he said.

"It's like a disease epidemiology intelligence," Minister Supari said in the meeting which was attended by around 1,800 health stakeholders from all over Indonesia.

The existing surveillance system failed to rapidly detect and anticipate a sudden emergence of several infectious diseases in the regions.

The planned establishment of a new surveillance agency is expected to prevent a disease outbreak and speed up handling of infectious disease problem.***
