Doha, December 30 (QNA) - The 27th edition of Qatar Exxon Mobil will begin tomorrow. It is the oldest competition in the 250 series. The tournament, which began in 1993, attracts the top-ranked players who start their new season in Doha and compete to win the Golden Falcon title. Qatar Exxon Mobil takes place two weeks before the start of the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open. The competition, which has a total prize of about 1.5 million dollars, has seen wide participation from tennis legends and first-class players, starting with Boris Becker, who won its first title in 1993, moving to Stephan Ederberg, Jim Courier, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, which was opened in 1992, hosts the tournament every year. The total capacity of the main court was 4000 at first, before the expansion to 7000 spectators in 2008. Secretary General of Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) Tarek Zainel said in a statement that Khalifa Complex is more than ready to host the competition this year. He added that the tournament's public village is now also ready with a children's area and a lot of interactive events that is perfect for the first week of the new year. (more)
