'CUT AND PASTE CULTURE' SOURCE OF DECLINE IN VARSITIES RESEARCH QUALITY

KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), March 23 (Bernama) -- The 'cut and paste culture' is one of the reasons for the decline in the quality of research by students at public institutions of higher education in the country, said the director-general of the Higher Education Department, Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi.

He said the use of computers and the Internet to get information had given
rise to the 'cut and paste culture' to the point of research processes being
neglected in advancement.

"Even though computers and the Internet are very important tools for
learning today, still students in public institutions of higher education should
not practise this culture as it does no provide a picture of a graduate's
scholarship attributes as to quality and authority.

"Graduates must have comprehensive abilities and not depend wholly on
information and communication technology," Radin Umar said in his speech to
officiate the opening of 1 Megalab at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (University
of Malaysia, Sabah) Library in Likas near here Monday.

University of Malaysia, Sabah or UMS is the ninth Malaysian public
university located in Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of East Malaysia
Sabah-state.

The UMS Library, with 500 computer units, is the first university to set up
the largest one-stop computer services centre in the country.

Radin Umar also reminded students to avoid the "mental fatigue" condition
that would restrict their thinking in moving forward in studies and learning.

On UMS' future, he said the varsity had the potential to be an excellent
centre for marine life research in the country.

"UMS has adequate infratructure for that and this advantage should be used
fully to enhance its status in research," he said.

Radin Umar said such a step was in line with the Higher Education Ministry'
vision to make UMS a research university.
