Government draws up master plan to develop mass media

(KPL) The government used the mass media for its socio-economic development tasks, said the Deputy Minister of Information and Culture, Prof. Dr. Bosengkham Vongdara at a seminar on 24 March.
The Ministry of Information and Culture, in cooperation with the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) organized a meeting on communication for empowering the ethnic peoples in Laos in Vientiane on 24 March.
Thirty participants were at this seminar, including Deputy Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Bosengkham Vongdara, UN representative to Laos, Ms Sonam Y. Rana, representatives from Lao Front for National Construction, the Khoun Radio Project and students from the
National University of Laos.
Although Laos has gone through hard economic times, but the Government had been setting aside some money from its budget to improve and expand the mass media in the country.
Thanks to the concern of the government, the mass media organizations developed and recently a new media law was passed and this should spur this sector to further develop.
The Ministry of Information and Culture is focusing on improving the quality of its information services and to get it linked to overseas news networks and it is working hard to expand the media of the country to the rural areas.
A master plan had been drawn up to ensure orderly development of the mass media network in the country and one important aspect of it is the decision to switch from the usage of the analog to the digital system by 2015.
Another aspect of the master plan is to expand the radio wave coverage to 90 per cent of the country and expand access to television reception to 70 per cent.
