Malaysia Eye Two-Gold Repeat At Special Olympics World Games
KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian contingent to the 2019 Special Olympics World Games (SOWG) hope to repeat their two-gold medal feat in the 15th edition of the meet in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from March 14-21.
Zulkarnain Umar, the assistant head of delegation, said he was confident Malaysia could win gold medals through Muhammad Haziq Rizal in equestrian (dressage B1) and Muhammad Naquib Ilmi Jamaludin in athletics (men's 100m).
“We also hope to get a medal from the women’s football team. The men’s team won gold in the previous edition but failed to qualify this time,” he told Bernama.
Zulkarnain said Malaysia won two gold medals in the men’s five-a-side football and bowling when they made their debut in the multi-sport event for the athletes with intellectual disabilities in Los Angeles in 2015.
This time, Malaysia are sending 29 athletes and 15 officials for golf, athletics, aquatics, bocce, bowling, equestrian and women’s 7-a-side football.
