Thai authorities destroy largest ever haul of fake goods

BANGKOK, March 27 (TNA) - Thai authorities destroyed more than a million items of counterfeit goods worth almost 1.6 billion baht (US$45 million) on Friday, the biggest ever such haul in Thailand, in an attempt to show the government was serious in protecting intellectual property rights and copyrights.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing the destruction of the counterfeit goods, Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot said the move was in accordance with the government's policy to crackdown on the violation of intellectual property rights and copyrights.

With the crackdown over the past 3 months and continuing measures, Mr. Alongkorn said Thailand hoped the US Trade Representative Office (USTR) would upgrade Thailand from the current Priority Watch List to the less restrictive Watch List next year.

The USTR placed Thailand and 11 other countries, including China, India and Russia, on its ''Priority Watch List'' of countries to be closely monitored regarding their protection of intellectual property rights. - (TNA)
