DEATH TOLL IN SITU GINTUNG DAM BURST RISES TO 96
Tangerang, March 29 (ANTARA) - The death toll in the Situ Gintung dam burst in the Cirendeu area southwest of Jakarta rose to 96 on Sunday afternoon.
South Tangerang Mayor H Soleh said on Sunday rescue workers were still searching for 102 people who had gone missing after the Situ Gintung sluice gate and embankment collapsed last Friday.
He said a total of 368 displaced people were being sheltered in a number of places including the medical school of Muhammadiyah University.
The dam burst which followed heavy rain last Thursday night had obliterated a 255-meter-long section of the dam, allowing water from its 20-hectare lake to rush out and inundate hundreds of houses in its immediate proximity.
The burst occurred at around 2 am local time last Friday, and the first volumes of water that it unleashed swept away tens of houses and a number of people.
The Situ Gintung dam complex covered a total area of 21 hectares and had a capacity to hold 21 million cubic meters of water.
The dam was built as a water reservoir during the Dutch colonial times.
