Lao garment export to increase by 5% this year

(KPL) Lao Garment Association admitted last week that it would only enjoy a five per cent increment in garment export for this year, due to the global economic turmoil.
Mr Onsy Bouthsivongsack, president of the Lao Garment Association disclosed that the garment industry is the third biggest revenue contributor to the country’s coffer and the ongoing financial crisis would have an adverse effect on its
export volume and ultimately its overall earnings.
In 2008 the export volume of garment products enjoyed an increase of 24 per cent and the garment manufacturers earned US$189 million kip.
However, the good news for Lao workers and as he had confirmed, none of the garment manufacturers is planning to retrench any garment worker even though they are already feeling the effects of a slight decrease in orders from their foreign customers.
“Firing the workers from garment factories is easier than the task of capacity building, but we decided on a policy of holding on to our present labour force as we are concerned about the welfare of our workers,” said Mr Onsy.
“ We know that although our garment factory members are facing the twin problems of global financial crisis and slow economic growth but we are not considering any retrenchment policy, he added.
Mr Onsy explained that more than 60 per cent of the labour force in the garment factories are from rural areas, equiped only with low job skills and low education but its members would not retrench them.
